Go from JFK airport to Manhattan by taxi
This summer we will go to New York, it is our first trip to the United States. We are looking at information and have doubts about what mean of transport to use to go from the JFK airport to our hotel in Manhattan. Our main problem is that we speak English very badly and we are worried about not understanding the taxi driver
Another issue that concerns us is that of safety. Are taxis safe in New York?

Hola Maite, de entrada que no te preocupe el no hablar inglés para coger un taxi en Nueva York, es posible de que el taxista tampoco lo hable. Nosotros cogimos varios taxis y en algún caso el conductor hablaba el inglés con dificultad, los conductores eran en su mayoría asiáticos. Además en Nueva York hay muchos hispanos y es fácil encontrarte con un conductor que te hable en castellano si ve que tú lo hablas.
Sobre el tema de la seguridad yo no me preocuparía, la única precaución es que siempre debes coger taxis de color amarillo. En el aeropuerto están a la salida de las terminales ( son los oficiales ). Es posible que tengas que hacer bastante cola. No cojas los taxis de color negro, más que nada porque te pueden inflar el precio (no llevan taxímetro). Una vez en Manhattan verás que te puedes mover sin miedo, porque hay muchísima policía por las calles.
Sobre la duda con el tema de las propinas es lógico que tengas dudas, yo también fue algo que me sorprendió. Para ellos son muy importantes, porque los sueldos son bajos y es un complemento que necesitan. De todas maneras en muchos casos verás que ya viene incluida en el precio, por ejemplo, en los taxis al pagar con tarjeta en el terminal te aparece un menú para escoger el porcentaje de propina que deseas pagar y no hay opción de decir que ninguno.
Por lo demás relájate y disfrutad del viaje, Nueva York es una ciudad impresionante.
